Toad (dinghy towing)

A toad, sometimes called a dinghy, is a car towed behind a motorhome so the driver has a smaller, more maneuverable vehicle for errands and sightseeing once parked, rather than having to break camp and drive the entire motorhome. The term applies specifically to motorhomes towing a car, not to towable trailers or fifth wheels.

Not every car can be towed with all four wheels on the ground, known as flat towing or dinghy towing, since it depends on the vehicle's transmission and drivetrain being rated for it by the manufacturer. Vehicles not rated for flat towing typically need a tow dolly or a full trailer instead, which adds cost and setup time.

The most common mistake is assuming any car can be flat towed and skipping the manufacturer's towing guide, which can lead to transmission damage on vehicles not designed for it. Confirming flat tow compatibility, and installing a properly matched base plate and tow bar, are worth doing before the first trip.
