Proportional versus time-delay is the decision, and everything else is packaging. A proportional controller reads deceleration with an internal accelerometer and applies trailer brakes in step with how hard you are stopping, so a gentle approach to a light stays gentle and a panic stop puts full gain on the trailer. A time-delay unit ramps to a preset output on a fixed curve every time you touch the pedal, which means it either grabs on easy stops or arrives late on hard ones, and you feel that as fore and aft surging in a heavy fifth wheel. For anything above about 3,000 pounds, or any mountain grade, proportional is the one to buy. Axle rating is the second number to check, quoted as 1 to 2 axles on smaller units and 1 to 4 on the larger ones, because the controller has to supply current for every brake magnet on the trailer and an undersized unit runs hot and fades. Mounting shapes the install: a dash-mounted box with an LED readout puts gain and boost within reach and needs a four-wire run to the brake switch and the battery, a knob-only remote head hides the electronics under the dash for a clean cab, and a trailer-mounted plug-and-tow module needs no vehicle wiring at all, which is the answer for a rented tow vehicle. Self-diagnostics that flag an open circuit or a short are genuinely useful. Boost presets and display colors are not.
