Charge controller

Regulates power from solar panels into the batteries; MPPT controllers harvest more energy than PWM in most conditions.

A charge controller sits between solar panels and the house battery bank, regulating voltage and current so the panels charge the battery safely instead of overcharging it. Without one, raw panel output would be too high and unregulated for a battery to accept safely over time.

There are two main types. PWM controllers are simpler and cheaper but only work efficiently when panel voltage closely matches battery voltage. MPPT controllers actively convert excess panel voltage into extra amperage, which typically produces meaningfully more charging power from the same panels, especially in cooler weather or partial shade.

A common mistake is pairing a PWM controller with panels rated well above the battery's voltage, which wastes much of the panel's potential output. Matching controller type and amperage rating to both the panel array and the battery bank size is worth doing before installation rather than after, and leaving room to add more panels later can save a costly controller upgrade down the road.
